Because the palm family is almost entirely tropical with many species of a very great size, it has attracted only a few botanists to study them. As a consequence palms are poorly represented in herbaria and little understood in almost every respect. Notably their taxonomy is in a very poor condition since many taxa are described on inadequate material which allows only an arbitrary interpretation and, moreover, the family is grossly overnamed. Hence the second author (1965) proposed a large-scale lumping in his critical treatment of the Suriname palms. The present paper is intended to give some palynological evidence to support a few of these lumpings on the generic level. In a previous palynological study in Cocoid palms the present authors (Punt and Wessels Boer, 1966) were able to demonstrate a rather strong but not absolute correlation between the pollen types and the staminate flower types within the genus Attalea in the broad sense. The existence of partly apparently primitive, partly very advanced flower types within the otherwise close related group of Geonomoid palms made it worthwhile to investigate the same feature in this group. The Geonomoid palms are usually considered to comprise 7-9 genera of monoecious Arecoid palms which share a large number of characteristics (Burret, 1930; Moore, 1966). The Loganiaceae is a heterogeneous, eurypalynous family with colpate, colporate or porate pollen grains (Erdtman 1952). Some years ago Dr. Leeuwenberg, specialist in the taxonomy of African Loganiaceae, asked the senior author to undertake an investigation of the pollen grains of that family. Unfortunately that was impossible at the time because of other commitments. Later, however, a possibility presented itself for carrying out the investigation in connection with a sojourn at the Palynological Laboratory at Solna. Three sections with a total number of four species of the genus Phyllanthus have been examined. The pollen grains show a strong resemblance to each other and also the taxonomic arguments to differentiate between the three sections proved to be rather weak. Because of both palynological and taxonomic reasons the sections Ceramanthus Baillon, Cluytiopsis Mueller Arg. and Anisolobium Mueller Arg. have been united into one section; viz. section Ceramanthus Baillon s.l. |

A pollen-morphological study has been carried out on the American Costoideae, a subfamily of the Zingiberaceae ( Costus L., Dimerocostus O. Kuntze, and Monocostus K. Schum.). Four pollen types and two subtypes could be established on the basis of size, exine and apertural characters. These types are: Costus lima type, Costus warmingii type, Costus congestiflorus type and Dimerocostus type. It is assumed that the pollen grains of the genus Costus are pollen morphologically more advanced than the grains of Dimerocostus and Monocostus. |

In the present study pollen morphology of the Euphorbeaceae is treated as an additional character in taxonomy. Besides the greater part of the genera occurring in the system of PAX and K. HOFFMANN (1931), most of the genera published after 1931 are studied. The pollen grains have been described with the aid of a terminology as simple as possible. In principle the terminology of IVERSEN and TROELS-SMITH has been followed, although in addition, many improvements of ERDTMAN have been used. A pollen-morphological study has been carried out on three genera of the Marcgraviaceae Norantea Aublet, Souroubea Aublet and Ruyschia Jacquin). Nine pollen types in Norantea and three pollen groups in Souroubea could be established. The pollen grains of Ruyschia could not be differentiated from those of Souroubea. Several distinct evolutionary trends have been distinguished in Norantea. These evolutionary trends were less distinct in Souroubea. A key to the pollen types has been given in addition. |

Contrary to Europe, with only one Caltha species, North America has at least three species of this genus. These are the polymorphic C. palustris L., also widely distributed in Europe, the floating aquatic C. natans Pall, and the polymorphic C. leptosepala-biflora group. Two previous papers (Smit 1967, 1968) dealt with taxonomic aspects of C. palustris, that in North America were not essentially different from those of European material. |
